SDL5 League Runners-Up Presentation
Club Tour to Bembridge Isle of Wight 7-11 October 2024
Fifty four Abbrook Bowling Club members and partners travelled to the Warner Coast Resort in Bembridge Isle of Wight from 7-11 October for an indoor bowling and sightseeing holiday organised by Rob Horrell.
Seven teams from Abbrook entered the bowling competition with two reaching the semi-final.
In a close match, Pete Sore, Margaret Hawkins, Jim Coker and Tony Sandelance lost to Janet Barr, Elaine Coombes, Norrie Wilson and Nigel Coombes, who subsequently lost a close match in the final to a team from Surrey.
While the bowling was in progress, non-bowlers had the opportunity to join a trip to Godshill, take a tour of the Isle of Wight or visit Osborne House.
The week was a great success, enjoyed by all and gave a vote of thanks to Rob for organising the week.

MDL Finals Day, Babbacombe Bowls Club
The morning session provided a tense game which went down to the oppositions final wood. The Abbrook Park rink went into the final end trailing by the one shot. Our lead Jim Yeoman drew shot. There it stayed and with only the skips to bowl the match was level. The Brixham St. Mary skip proved disastrous giving Abbrook a second shot and a winning position in the match. However, with his final wood their skip looked to have picked a wrong line and it looked like game over only to get a glance on a wing wood to come into the head, pick the jack to make it one shot to Brixham St. Mary.M A fortunate outcome in a very close game. Hard luck guys. The team was Jim Yeoman, Geoff Walling, Jake Woodbridge and Martin Bailey
Geoff Walling and Tony Sandelance won the Pairs in the afternoon against Phil Stanley and Norrie Wilson in an extremely wet conditions. The option to postpone the game was offered, but it was decided to carry on, not thinking it would get much worse, but it did, with rooster tails of water coming off the bowls in the last two ends!
Phil and Norrie started well, but after coming from behind Geoff and Tony were one up on the last end and gained an extra shot to win the game. Very close and very wet!

Club Secretary Phil Stanley wrote;
“The weather played ball on Bank Holiday Monday for the Bowls and Barbecue, which was well attended with a full Clubhouse.
Tom organised a Bowls Round Robin of six ends, which was won by Helen and Phil Lannon and Rob organised his normal plentiful BBQ and salad, aided by Pauline, Janice and Maddie in the kitchen. Many thanks to all.
Maddie closed the evening by serenading us with some lovely vocals, which were well received by the members.
Many thanks also, to all who helped set up the rinks and clear up in the Clubhouse afterwards.
All in all, another great afternoon.”

The Club managed to obtain a Community Grant from Kingsteignton Town Council for the purchase of two more benches and the committee decided to support the grant request by financing a third bench.
They all arrived this morning and have been placed in position on the road side of the Green to replace the metal and wooden benches that were becoming dangerously rotten in the frame.
Thanks to Dave Woods and Tony Howard for their help in moving the benches, also to Nigel Coombes who was, unfortunately, on his way to help when I told him he wasn't needed.

Club Secretary Phil Stanley wrote;
“We had eighteen students attend yesterday and after showing them the basics of bowling, set them up in teams. They spent time getting used to bowling under instruction and then trying to score on the targets or around the jack, which became quite competitive.
Everyone seemed to enjoy their time at the club and were given the opportunity to come to the club on a Friday evening, possibly with their parents. Some of them showed promise, so we hope to see some back.”
Club gardening day Saturday 15th June 2024
A tremendous effort has made the area look much tidier and thanks go to: Andrew Wilkinson, Lin and Jeff Sharland, Helen and Phil Lannon, Carol and Tony Howard, Pat and Graham Smith, Tina Sharpe, Liz Rollason, Dave Schooling, Anne Russell, Pam Carwardine and not forgetting Carol Wilkinson and Jean Stanley who did sterling work in the kitchen, supplying tea and coffee and even made lasagne, garlic bread and salad, followed by apple pie and cream or Black Forest gateau for lunch, which was much appreciated by everyone.
Sunday 26th May 2024 - BBQ
Despite the threat of rain, club members and family enjoyed a friendly roll-up and BBQ provided by Rob, with Pauline and Jean in the kitchen and Nigel in the bar.
Many thanks to all who helped on the day, including Lin and Anne who set the rinks out in the early shower of rain.

saw the opening of the green. President Gordon Clark opened proceedings by bowling the first wood of the season. This was then followed by the traditional spider. The winner was Trish Bailey pictured below with President Gordon Clark and Chairman Tom Archer.
The Club continues its investment in the quest to create an excellent green with the purchase of a fully reconditioned Dennis FT610 cylinder mower, which is wider than the current Dennis FT510 by four inches.
It has been completely resprayed, has a brand new Honda engine, front roller and nearly new 10-blade rotor and all new bearings. It looks and runs like new. We also obtained a verti-cutter cassette to fit.
It was also discovered that our old mower was in dire need of some work, especially on the rear rollers, so that has been taken for repair and should be returned within a couple of weeks.
